Fluid examines water as a site of environmental vulnerability and ecological change. The project developed from Skarbakka’s experience of being evacuated during the catastrophic flooding of Prague in 2002 and became a sustained body of work after receiving support from Creative Capital in 2005. Working with dive teams, he submerged himself in lakes, oceans, and other underwater environments, removing his breathing equipment and positioning his body among submerged structures, vegetation, and debris. The immersed body functions as a stand-in for human vulnerability within environments increasingly shaped by climate change and ecological disruption.
