RED, WHITE, BLACK AND BLUE: THE REVENGE OF BILLY JACK 2014-2015

Red, White, Black and Blue: The Revenge of Billy Jack is a body of staged photographs developed in Prescott, Arizona, at the courthouse grounds where portions of the 1971 film Billy Jack were filmed. Working with a black belt in jiu-jitsu, Skarbakka used actual throws, falls and impacts to extend the film’s physical confrontations, removing the surrounding landscape and isolating the bodies against a black field. Produced for exhibition at ten by ten feet, the photographs use the language of action cinema to examine masculinity, political division, physical violence and the uncertainty of who is defending what.
